Sixth Grade

Sixth grade bridges the gap between childhood and adolescence. The sixth grader grows and changes dramatically during the course of the year. At Saint Andrew’s, we recognize, address and celebrate the mercurial nature of the sixth grader. Participation in our overnight Outdoor Education program enhances cooperation, team building and problem solving. During assigned tutorials sixth graders practice organization, study and time management skills, for these assist the student in succeeding school years. They spend a lot of time on the writing process and on reading and analyzing various genres, honing critical thinking skills through class work and projects. Studying ancient history and current events helps students to better understand the world in which they live. Sixth grade offers various options to continue the study of mathematics, preparing the student for advanced mathematics in later years. Our study of science includes examining the earth, human biology and energy. Foreign language preparation is important in today’s world and so students learn either French or Spanish. Physical education, technology, music, art and religion are vital components that enhance our core curriculum. A highlight of the sixth grade year is a three-day overnight trip with Boojum Institute.
