Eighth Grade French Overview

Bienvenue à la classe de français!

French is an official language for over 140 million people, and an important second language for millions more all over the world. There are French speakers in Europe, North and South America, Africa, Asia, the Middle East and the South Pacific. France is geographically the largest country in Western Europe, and economically is second only to Germany.

Culturally, France has played a central role in the development of Western civilization. Approximately 45% of English vocabulary, or roughly 50,000 words, are derived from French. Its written literary tradition is over one thousand years old, making it the oldest and arguably the richest living literature in Europe.

Our goal in the Middle School French Program is to develop the four language skills:  listening, speaking, reading and writing.  As these skills develop, the students are provided the tools to communicate simply in French, as well as deepening their appreciation of other cultures and their sense of global connections.  Students often work in pairs or groups and will be expected to complete and present several oral presentations throughout the year.  Technology and audiovisual materials will be used to further enhance the language learning experience.

In 8th grade French, topics of study include: friends, family, house, weekend activities, hobbies, school life, food, clothing and shopping.  The students expand their knowledge of regular and irregular verbs in the present, past and near future tenses, interrogatives, negative expressions, direct and indirect object pronouns, possessive adjectives, regular and irregular adjectives, idiomatic expressions with avoir, faire, and etre.

By the end of the 8th grade students should be able to communicate in oral and written French in the past, present and future on a variety of topics pertaining to their daily lives.
