Studio & Performing Arts

The Saint Andrew's arts programs are integral to our mission to educate the whole child.  Research shows that learning through the arts often results in greater academic achievement and higher test scores.

Studio Art
As German artist Joseph Beuys so boldly proclaimed, “Everyone is an Artist,” which includes students of all ages. We all have the ability to communicate in a unique and dynamic visual way.

The Studio Art program is a cohesive, developmental sequence that spans kindergarten through eighth grade. Throughout the program, starting with the youngest children, students are exposed to the history of art, looking at the work of many artists and civilizations to inspire and excite their own work.  The curriculum includes work in a broad range of media including drawing and painting, sculpture, ceramics, printing, and mixed media.  The Curricula is developed based on the media taught.  The emphasis is on the integrity of art as a process.

Performing Arts
In the Lower School, students explore their talents as performers and music creators using approaches that include Kodaly and Orff. Students learn the foundations of sight singing, vocal technique, improvisation, composing, music reading and instrumental work. Students perform in concerts, productions, chapel and community events.

Saint Andrew's Middle School Performing Arts program is broad-based, including theory, history, instrumental practice on various instruments—percussive, melodic, and chorded, ensemble playing, world music studies, intensive listening training, composition, improvisation, and interdisciplinary endeavors. We also explore dance, poetry, and theater, finding the connections to music. As we lead the students towards greater musical competence, we simultaneously emphasize the importance of respect, listening, patience, and cooperation.
