National Junior Honor Society

Established in 1929, the National Junior Honor Society (NJHS) is the nation's premier organization established to recognize outstanding middle school students.  In order to be eligible for the NJHS at Saint Andrew’s Episcopal School, a student must have completed at least one entire semester at the school in the seventh or eighth grade.

In order to qualify for membership in the Saint Andrew's Chapter of the NJHS, a student must be exemplary in all of the NJHS characteristics: scholarship, citizenship, service, leadership and character.  Requirements are stated below.

SCHOLARSHIP: A student must have achieved a 3.66 GPA at the semester. The GPA is weighted according to how many times a week a class meets. If a class meets three times a week, then the grade in that class is multiplied by three. If a class meets five times a week, then the grade in that class is multiplied by five. Grades are counted as follows:

A+ or A = 4.0
A- = 3.66
B+ = 3.33
B = 3.0
B- = 2.66
C+ = 2.33
C = 2.0

Therefore, a class where a student achieved an A- and met three times a week would be 3.66 x 3 = 10.98, etc. The total of all the weighted grades is divided by the total number of classes per week. This is the weighted GPA.

CITIZENSHIP: Citizenship grades for all classes must be an S+ or above. In addition, a student cannot qualify if s/he has lost 5 or more points per quarter.

SERVICE: In order to qualify, students must show that they have performed 5 hours of service throughout the semester prior to applying. (Class community service field trip hours do NOT count toward this service requirement.)

LEADERSHIP: Students must demonstrate leadership characteristics such as being helpful, supportive of peers, working well with others, and showing initiative.

CHARACTER: The student shows that s/he is a role model in following the Six Pillars of Character: Trustworthiness, Respect, Responsibility, Fairness, Caring, and Citizenship.

APPLICATION: If at the semester, a student has the required GPA and citizenship grades s/he will be invited to apply for NJHS membership. The student will receive an invitation letter as well as the necessary application forms. This letter of invitation does not indicate automatic acceptance into the NJHS at SAES. The application will need to be submitted to the NJHS advisor. The NJHS Committee then reviews the applications and evaluates the candidates on the basis of their demonstration of excellence in the NJHS characteristics. The candidates are notified of the committee’s decision by mail.

NJHS students are involved in many service activities throughout the year. These include helping at the Harvest Festival, serving as tour guides at Open House events, and Crosswalk safety duty before and after school. NJHS meetings are held on Wednesdays during lunch.
