Middle School Advisory
Each Middle School Student Is A Member Of An Advisory Group That Meets On A Daily Basis To Start The School Day.
Organized by grade level groups of 11-13 students each, our Advisory classes ensure that students feel connected, heard, empowered, and safe. The Advisory time is designed to meet four essential adolescent needs: autonomy, competence, relationships, and fun.
Based upon the Developmental Designs approach, we use developmentally appropriate practices for adolescents to support each student’s social-emotional and character development as well as to build our middle school community and culture. Structures are introduced to students early in the year and carefully maintained to promote positive behaviors, with the focus on building self-awareness and self-control. These structures extend beyond the Advisory classroom and are implemented across all of our regular classrooms as well to ensure a consistent school-wide approach.
In our inclusive Advisory classrooms, all voices are heard and balanced participation by all students is not only encouraged but essential. Daily practices promote acceptance and caring behaviors through an emphasis on knowing and valuing all students in all classes as well as through collaborative problem-solving structures.
