Navigating Middle School: 5 Essential Tips for Success

Starting middle school—whether you're new to Saint Andrew’s or moving up from lower school—can feel like a big change. I’ve compiled a few helpful tips to make your transition smoother and easier! Middle school might seem intimidating initially, but with the right mindset (and these tips), we are setting you up for success. 

 

1 . Memorize your locker codes and locker numbers:  

You’ll have two lockers – your main locker and a P.E. locker – so it’s important to know your codes and locker numbers. Either by repeating your code a few times each day or writing them down in a safe place, knowing your locker codes will help you transition between classes faster and help you get to class on time. If you ever forget them, don’t panic! Just head to the office, and someone there can help you out. They have the codes and a master key to open your locker. Also, always remember to lock your locker when you’re not using it to keep your stuff safe. 

2. Remember to always bring a pencil and paper to class: 

Most of your classes will provide notebooks and binders, but it’s a good idea to bring your own pencils, erasers, and any other items you think might come in handy. Being prepared means you’re always ready to jump into learning, and you won’t miss out on anything important from class. 

3. Try to memorize your schedule: 

You don’t need to have it memorized perfectly on day one, but try to get familiar with it so you’re not constantly checking it. Over time, you’ll start to remember it. It also helps to have a schedule buddy – a classmate with the same schedule – so you can remind each other what’s next. Just keep in mind that sometimes there are special events or changes, so your schedule might be altered. Always check your email to stay updated and ensure you don't miss any important announcements or changes to the schedule.

4. Remember what subject is in which room: 

You don’t want to end up in a classroom that you are not supposed to go to! Your schedule tells you the room numbers, so take some time during your first week to learn where everything is. And don’t forget, you can ask your schedule buddy for help!

5. Struggling with an assignment or project?: 

Start by asking a classmate! Maybe you missed something your teacher said in class, or your peer knows how to solve that tricky math problem you’re stuck on, getting peer help can often clear things up quickly. But if you’re still confused, don’t worry – you can sign up for office hours every Thursday. It’s a great time to ask teachers questions, get extra help, or just check in if you’re feeling stuck.
